Flyers or mailers that list the wrong election date in Tennessee are being investigated as potentially deceptive election practices, and intentionally sending them can violate state election law.

What is happening with the flyers
- In Tennessee’s 7th Congressional District, voters have reported receiving anonymous mailers and flyers that list the wrong date for an upcoming special election, telling people to vote the day after Election Day.
- Tennessee Democratic officials have publicly said they are investigating these mailers as fraudulent materials designed to confuse voters about when to vote.
What Tennessee law says
- Tennessee’s election code includes a section titled “False or misleading information regarding voting,” which makes it unlawful to knowingly provide materially false information about polling dates, times, or locations, or about voter registration status or deadlines.
- Violations of this provision can be treated as criminal offenses, on top of any applicable federal laws that prohibit voter intimidation or interference with the right to vote.
If you got one of these flyers
- Verify your correct Election Day, polling place, and hours directly from the Tennessee Secretary of State or your county election commission website or office.
- Keep the flyer, take clear photos (front and back, including any postage), and report it to your county election office and, if possible, to a nonpartisan election protection hotline or local voting-rights organization.
