Exposed: White House Staffer Behind ‘Johnny MAGA’ Pro-Trump X Account

A bombshell investigation has revealed that a popular pro-Trump X (formerly Twitter) account known as “Johnny MAGA,” with nearly 300,000 followers, is secretly operated by Garrett Wade, a rapid response manager in President Trump’s White House.[WIRED][Raw Story] This “sock puppet” account has been amplifying official White House messaging while posing as an independent grassroots voice, raising serious questions about transparency and manipulation in political communications.[MEXC News]

The Account’s Reach and Activity

Created in January 2021, “Johnny MAGA” quickly grew into a influential player in the MAGA ecosystem. The account routinely boosts President Trump’s Truth Social posts, defends administration policies, and launches personal attacks on Democrats like California Gov. Gavin Newsom and former Vice President Kamala Harris—especially during the 2024 election cycle.[1][2]

  • Shared misleading claims about flag-burning protests in Minneapolis following the killing of Renee Good, questioning ICE involvement while echoing White House rapid response feeds.
  • Called a controversial AI-generated video depicting Barack and Michelle Obama derogatorily as a “masterpiece,” aligning with Trump’s defense.
  • Promoted immigration enforcement and supported allies like Turning Point USA.

“To its audience, Johnny MAGA looked like an independent voice, another outraged supporter in the MAGA media ecosystem.” WIRED

Who is Garrett Wade?

Garrett Wade works directly in the Trump White House as a rapid response manager, helping craft and disseminate official communications—the same content “Johnny MAGA” then amplifies to create an illusion of widespread organic support.[3][4] Public records link a phone number tied to Wade (from Bucks County, Pennsylvania) to the account, with the connection confirmed by a White House source. Wade, previously in communications roles and associated with a digital consulting firm, did not respond to requests for comment.[1]

Federal Election Commission records show Wade’s past donations via WinRed and employment history, including at a “tech school” and Opinion Architects.[1]

Implications of Sock Puppetry

This isn’t an isolated incident. “Sock puppet” accounts—fake personas boosting official narratives—have precedents, from Fox News countermeasures to Sen. Mike Lee’s @BasedMikeLee. Disinformation experts warn it erodes public trust: “People have a right to know who is trying to manipulate public opinion.”[5]

Outlets like Mother Jones, TownHall, and the New York Post have cited “Johnny MAGA” as authentic public sentiment, unwittingly furthering the amplification.[1]

What Happens Next?

As this story spreads on platforms like Facebook and Instagram, calls for accountability grow. Will the White House address the dual role, or is this the new normal for political influence operations?[6][7]
