Tragic Incident Overview

Nurul Amin Shah Alam, a 56-year-old nearly blind Rohingya refugee from Myanmar, was released from Erie County Holding Center on February 19, 2026, and dropped off by U.S. Border Patrol agents at a Tim Hortons roughly five miles from his home in Buffalo, New York.[1][2] Alam, who spoke little English and was medically fragile, went missing shortly after and was found dead on February 24 near KeyBank Center.[3]

CBP stated agents provided a “courtesy ride” to a “warm and safe location” near his last known address, noting no visible distress or disabilities at the time.[4] Buffalo temperatures were below freezing that weekend.[5]

Background on Alam

  • Arakan Rohingya refugee, blind in one eye with limited vision in the other.
  • Arrested a year prior during a walk; used curtain rod as aid, leading to misunderstanding with police (assault charges, later misdemeanor plea).
  • Family relocated; neither they nor his attorney were notified of release location.[6]

Official and Public Reactions

Figure/Agency Statement
Buffalo Mayor Sean Ryan “Profoundly troubling” and “inhumane” abandonment of vulnerable man.[4]
Aaron Reichlin-Melnick (immigration expert) “Infuriating” and predictable; questions accountability.[1]
Erie County DA Reviewing the case; cause health-related, not homicide or exposure.[7]

Social media amplified outrage, with calls for agent charges.[8] Homicide detectives examined the timeline.[9]
